VIOLATIONS OF GRICE’S COOPERATIVE PRINCIPLES AS HUMOR STRATEGIES IN SHORT-JOKE TEXTS

Abstract:
The present study investigated now characters in the Reader’s Digest short-joke texts violate Grice’s Cooperative Principles in their daily conversation to create humor. This paper aims at analyzing one main category of verbal humor from a pragmatic perspective, hoping to find some pragmatic guidelines that direct humor production and understanding. Data were collected from 30 short-joke texts in Reader’s Digest World Funniest Jokes. The findings indicated that among all humor strategies resulting from the violations of Grice’s Cooperative Principles were used to create humor. It was also discovered that the speakers would employ different kinds of strategies to achieve their intended humorous effects since every type of humor had its own designated function or purpose. The study concluded that humor can either be funny or irritating. Thus it is important for speakers to select appropriate humor strategies to attain their goals in the process of communication and interaction.
